A SPONSOR of the YUKON QUEST
We’ve fallen in love with an aspect of Yukon life which we want to tell you all about. During our journey north this past June and July, we chanced upon Muktuk Adventures. Situated on a roughly 100-acre spread just north of Whitehorse, Frank Turner and Anne Tayler’s place is home to over 115 mushing dogs – a mix of huskies, labs and retrievers.
The dogs are the first sight to greet you as you pull into Muktuk. While the dogs are tethered in their compound (can you imagine letting that many dogs roam free?), it’s obvious they are extremely healthy, happy and well-adjusted. Each dog has its own little house, with its name painted on and visitors are encouraged to walk amongst them and pet them – they love the attention. The dogs are trim, athletic and look like they’re raring to go! Older dogs are left to roam free – we met and made friends with Bozo who is over 16 years of age and is a champion (as is Frank Turner) of the Yukon Quest, the annual dog sledding race which takes place every February between Whitehorse and Fairbanks, Alaska. Frank Turner is a well-respected member of the Whitehorse community and a recipient of the Veterinarian’s Choice Award for animal care. Simply put, Frank loves his dogs – he knows each and every one’s name and history!
At Muktuk, you can visit with the dogs and listen to Frank’s stories about the annual race, the Yukon Quest, which he has entered 20 years in a row, and won twice! In the winter months, you can actually participate in dog sledding expeditions for a day – or many days – out in the bush!
Frank has yet to decide if he will participate in this winter’s Yukon Quest. Rancho products will be helping to fuel him if he does, as we have offered to be one of Frank’s sponsors. We are delighted to have met Frank and Anne and definitely plan on returning to Muktuk in the near future.
Frank and Anne offer food and accommodation to volunteers who would like to experience a summer (or winter!) with the dogs at Muktuk Adventures. For more information, visit their website at Muktuk.com
