Wholesale ordering season is upon us

Posted by & filed under article, recipe.

DSCN7840-(4058-of-5949)-sqThus marks the opening of our 2016 wholesale ordering season!

Like most years, this one has gone by quickly, but we are looking forward to what the season has in store for us.

Our focus this year is environmental – a topic that has always been close to our hearts, but we are taking it grassroots and starting at home. We have done away with the majority of the paper copies of the newsletter.

Crunchy Granola

Posted by & filed under recipe.

DSC_0162R-sqThis delightful recipe was submitted by a long-time customer, and we’re very happy she’s shared it with us.

It’s been popular with the whole Rancho Vignola team, and we think you’ll enjoy it just as much.

Granola is something that is a great versatile food to have on hand.

Not only is it a tasty addition to cereal or with yogurt, it’s also an easily transportable snack to throw in your bag when you’re on the go.

Macadamia nuts: Rancho product of the month

Posted by & filed under article.

Macadamias_1-(5685-of-5949)The macadamia nut is native to certain areas of Australia. Locally it is known by many names, including bush nut, Queensland nut, maroochi nut and bauple nut. Globally it is more commonly known as macadamia.

There are only four species of macadamia, three of which are of commercial importance and only two of which are edible in raw form. The inedible species are poisonous, the toxicity in the fruit coming from cyanogenic glucosides. Read more on “Macadamia nuts: Rancho product of the month” »

Flavourful Pie Crust

Posted by & filed under recipe.

DSC_0395R-sqMaking their own pie crust has many competent cooks shudder at the thought.

We’re happy to tell you it doesn’t have to be that daunting, with the the right tools and a good recipe.

Pie crust is often quite bland, lacking much in the way of character.

Take your pie crust up a notch in flavour by adding nuts!

They bring a whole new depth to the dish you create.

While this recipe uses walnuts, feel free to experiment. Hazelnuts, almonds, Brazil nuts, pecans and macadamias are also all quite complementary.

Incan berries: Rancho product of the month

Posted by & filed under article.

gooseberryWith so many names to go by and so many subgenera, this was one of the more challenging posts to write!

Incan berries are one of my favourite berries, sweet and tart with a great texture and usually found with the fun little dried-leaf husk still attached.

They’re not always easy to find fresh and even harder to find dried, but their flavour is not akin to anything else. A berry that’s relatively uncommon and under-appreciated by the North American market deserves some serious recognition!

Green Veg Fry

Posted by & filed under recipe.

Spring is definitely here, and with it fresh vegetables, flowers and new growth just about everywhere you look.

The baby pak choy (very similar to the better-known bok choy) looked too good to pass up at the local farmers market, so to the Rancho Kitchen it went to create a delicious fresh recipe to share!

The beauty with most recipes, this one included, is that you can customize them however you like. Don’t have pak choy? Try some baby bok choy or full-sized bok choy chopped up.

Brazil nuts: Rancho product of the month

Posted by & filed under article.

Brazil_nuts-sqThe Brazil nut is a particularly distinctive species of seed (botanically speaking).

The Brazil nut tree from which it comes is one of the most economically essential plants of the Amazon.

It is the only global commodity that is harvested from the wild rather than plantations.

It’s also the most significant non-timber product in the world, next to rubber.

Sun-Dried Tomato Hummus

DSC_0115R-sqIf you’re looking for more ways to save time in the kitchen while making nutritious food, try making some hummus.

It’s so versatile and easy to make that I keep some on hand at all times. It’s the perfect busy-day snack with some crackers, added to a sandwich or to dip some veggies in. I always make a larger batch than I need at the time, as it freezes very well.
